The Perfect Emergency Flashlight: Features You Didn’t Know You Needed
11:56:40/October.02.2025

There’s one item every emergency kit, go-bag, or glove box should have: a powerful, reliable flashlight. In moments of crisis, your lighting tool shouldn’t just work. It should work fast, shine bright, and adapt to whatever the situation demands. From power outages and roadside breakdowns to natural disasters and unexpected blackouts, having the right emergency flashlight on hand can be the difference between safety and chaos.

But what makes an emergency flashlight truly great?

Enter the Clover LD35R—a compact, full-featured flashlight that goes far beyond the basics. With a sleek, durable build, extras like glass-breaking tips and strobe, and one of the most versatile lighting configurations available, this flashlight is designed not just to survive emergencies, but to help you thrive.

Why You Need a Reliable Emergency Flashlight

Emergencies are unpredictable, but your flashlight shouldn’t be. Whether you’re navigating a dark hallway during a power failure or assessing your surroundings after a storm, light is essential. That’s why you need the best by your side.

Here’s why a purpose-built emergency flashlight matters:

  • Power outages often last longer than expected, especially during storms or grid failures.

  • Vehicle emergencies on dark roads require visibility to inspect under the hood, change a tire, or flag down help.

  • Disaster preparedness kits are incomplete without a reliable light source for signaling, navigation, and area lighting.

  • Urban and wilderness survival situations demand multi-functional tools that don’t fail under pressure.

  • The Clover LD35R meets all of these needs and then some, making it a standout choice among serious preppers and everyday users alike.

What Makes a Great Emergency Flashlight?

  • Not all flashlights are created equal. Here’s what to look for in the best emergency flashlight:

  • Long beam distance: A powerful beam helps you see obstacles, read signage, or assess danger from a safe distance.

  • Rechargeable with backup options: USB-C charging is convenient, but a removable battery means you can swap in spares if the grid is down.

  • Compact and lightweight: You want a light that fits in your kit or glove box without adding bulk.

  • Durability: Look for impact resistance, water resistance, and a rugged exterior that stands up to the elements.

  • Multi-mode functionality: Emergency lights should include strobe and SOS functions for personal safety or signaling for help.

  • Hands-free capability: A magnetic tail or the ability to tail-stand turns a flashlight into a room-filling lantern in seconds.

  • Color modes: Red and blue lights help preserve night vision or serve as attention-grabbing beacons when needed.

  • The Clover LD35R doesn’t just check all these boxes—it raises the bar for what a multi-functional flashlight can do.

LED Flashlights Are Bright—But Just How Bright, Exactly?
Some lights claim they max out at 900 lumens, but you can use a light sensor to make sure for yourself. It seems like I have been slightly obsessed with flashlights for quite some time. Perhaps it started when the Clover lights became popular in the '80s. It was that mini Maglite that ran on 2 AA batteries that I really liked. It was small enough that you could carry around and bright enough that it could actually be useful. When I was a bit older, I would even build and modify my own flashlights. One of my favorites was an underwater light I used for cave diving. It ran on a large lead-acid battery and powered a 25 Watt projector bulb. That thing was great (but not super portable).

The Best Camping Lanterns of 2025 for Every Type of Camper
It takes just one night of camping experience to know that a reliable light source is an essential piece of equipment — and we’re not talking about the one on your phone. Camping lanterns cast an even 360-degree glow for optimum hands-free visibility so that you can see to set up your tent, prepare that gourmet campfire meal, or simply take advantage of the peace and quiet with a good book. The best ones offer multiple brightness settings for different scenarios; enough battery life to last a night or two out in the wilderness; and an outdoor-ready, weatherproof build. Other, more specialized features to consider range from solar panels to colored mood lighting. To help you find the camping lantern that best suits your needs, Travel + Leisure editors tested 18 popular models both at home and out in the field. Each one was evaluated for ease of setup, portability, design, brightness, durability, and value with average scores used to determine our favorites. The T+L team continued to test the lanterns on camping trips over the course of six months to determine long-term durability and performance, and we updated this article with our findings.
